A deck that looks straight into the neighbour’s kitchen does not get used much. A privacy screen fixes that without closing in the whole yard, but the wrong one is flimsy, ugly or hard to mount.
Here is how to choose one: measure first, pick the screening level, decide how it mounts, then think about finish and upkeep.
How do you size a privacy screen for a deck?
Measure the sightline you want to block, not the length of the deck. Stand where you normally sit, look toward the problem window or yard, and note where the line of sight crosses your railing. Panel height and position follow from that.
PrimeAlux privacy screen panels are 2.6 ft wide by 6 ft high as a nominal size, and custom sizes are available by contacting the company. Narrow panels are easy to place in a run or use one at a time to block a single angle. See the PrimeAlux privacy screen panels for the current options.
Should you pick a solid or a spaced-slat screen?
Choose solid slats where you need to block views completely, and spaced slats where you want shade and some airflow. PrimeAlux screens come in Semi-Privacy, Privacy and Privacy Plus configurations, in horizontal or vertical orientation.
Spaced slats still show gaps at close range. They suit a patio you want to define rather than hide. If your concern is a neighbour’s upper window, a solid screen gives a more reliable result.
How are screens mounted on a deck or patio?
There are three different situations, and they are not interchangeable:
- Ground-mounted on a patio or lawn: posts sit on anchored base plates, and PrimeAlux recommends a concrete base about 15 cm thick under the base plate.
- Mounted to a deck: the base plate and post anchoring can adapt to deck mounting, but the connection has to suit the deck’s structure.
- Attached to an existing structure: this depends entirely on what the structure can carry and how the load is transferred.
The 15 cm figure describes a mounting surface under a base plate. It is not a designed foundation, and it does not tell you what a footing needs to resist on your site.
On a raised deck, a tall solid panel catches wind like a sail. The deck’s load rating, the way the screen connects to the framing and the wind exposure all matter. PrimeAlux advises confirming the structural requirements first. If you are not sure what your deck can carry, ask a qualified contractor or engineer before you fasten anything to it.
Which finish works with decking and furniture?
Four standard colours are offered: Walnut, Grey Walnut, Natural Walnut and Grey Brown. The wood-grain tones sit well next to composite or cedar decking, and the grey tones suit modern furniture and dark railings.
Look at a sample against your decking in daylight. Colours can shift between a screen and an outdoor setting, and it is better to find out before the order. See also Decorade House for more informations.
Can a screen also help around a pool?
It can screen the pool area from view. A privacy screen is not a pool barrier, though, and pool enclosures have their own municipal requirements for height, gates and latches. Check your city’s rules, and do not assume a decorative screen counts as a compliant enclosure.
How much upkeep does an aluminum screen need?
Very little. The powder-coated aluminum does not need painting or staining, and PrimeAlux recommends rinsing with water. The limited warranty lists 15 years on the coated aluminum, and it requires cleaning twice a year following PrimeAlux instructions.
Wood screens, by comparison, usually need regular sealing or staining to stay presentable.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a PrimeAlux privacy screen panel?
The nominal size is 2.6 ft wide by 6 ft high. Custom sizes are available on request. Shipping is calculated after you contact the sales team.
Can a privacy screen be attached to a deck?
PrimeAlux says the base plate and post anchoring can adapt to deck installations. Because raised decks have load limits and wind exposure, confirm the structural requirements with a qualified person before installing.
Do I need concrete under the screen?
For ground installations, PrimeAlux recommends a concrete base about 15 cm thick under the base plate. Follow the installation manual for your specific product, and treat the figure as a minimum for the mounting surface, not a footing design.
Is a permit required for a privacy screen?
Usually not for an ordinary residential screen or fence, but height limits and setbacks in your municipality’s by-law still apply. Pool enclosures have separate rules. Check your local by-law before you order.
